Obituary

Doris Marie Hedges Shinkle Miller Penniman

A Celebration of Life will be held Sat. Jan. 4, 2014 at 1pm at the RCCS’s Pacific Auditorium, with Pastor Bob Whiteman officiating.  A reception will follow in the cafeteria.

Doris was born Feb. 13, 1942 in North Bend, Or to Herb and Verna Hedges. She was the 2nd child of ten children. Doris died surrounded by her family on Dec. 22, 1013 in Salem.

After completing high school in Reedsport, Doris married Harry Shinkle and moved to Fort Frazier, BC where they homesteaded and built a house from raw logs. They became parents to Lance in 1969 and Carrie Beth in 1972. Harry and Doris moved back to Oregon and settled in Gardiner. They divorced in 1979. Being a single parent, Doris worked at Laskey Clifton Construction for a short time and then went to work at IP Paper Mill where she became the secretary for the AWPPW.

Doris was a member of the Order of the Rainbow Girls and the Order of the Eastern Star, Martha Chapter #48 in Reedsport.  She served as Mother Advisor and Oregon Grand Worthy Matron, as well as Grand Representative to Pennsylvania.

She met and married Bob Miller in 1992 and they were later divorced in 2002.

Doris was a daughter, sister, class mate, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, friend, author, photographer, singer, organizer, cook, florist, Booster, Eastern Star Sister, Proud Christian, Sunday School Teacher, Community Service Supporter and mostly a lover of life. Doris had a laugh and a smile like no other and always stated that she was only “36”. She loved her family and was very proud of every accomplishment. She loved working as a Teachers’ Assistant for the special needs students and was a mentor to many others. She always encouraged them to do their best.

Doris met the love of her life, Charles Allen Penniman. They were married on March 2, 2013. Together they blended several families. They traveled together to visit with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers; Maurice and Charles Hedges, her sister, Mary Hedges.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Penniman, son and wife, Lance and Janell Shinkle, daughter, Carrie Beth Zubek, brothers and wives; Carl and Cheryl Hedges, John Hedges, Jim and Tena Hedges, Frank and Laurice Hedges, Herb Hedges, sister and husband, Clarice and Bill Otis. Also surviving are four grandsons; Tyler, Devon, Colton and Gage Shinkle. She was aunt and great aunt to many, as well as a special friend to her extended families.

Memorial remembrances may be sent to REEF, Reedsport Boosters, Turner House Retirement Facility or to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in her memory.
