IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elvin Layne
Stingley
April 20, 1951 – December 8, 2024
Elvin “Pete” Stingley passed away unexpectedly on December 8, 2024 at his home. He was 73.
Pete was born on April 20th, 1951 in Eugene, Oregon to Elvin K & Dorcas Stingley. He was the youngest of 5 children. As a young child his family moved to Reedsport where he grew up. He was an exceptional swimmer and competed on the swim team throughout his school years.
A graduate of Reedsport High School’s Class of 69, Pete married Laurel Pape and together they had a daughter, Kristi. He worked a short period of time at the US Plywood Champion Paper Co., before enlisting in the Navy. While stationed at Treasure Island Naval base in California they welcomed a second daughter, Angela (Angie). Following her birth, he was stationed at the Pearl Harbor Naval Station on Honolulu, Hawaii, where he served on the nuclear submarine, the USS George Washington. Pete loved being out on the submarine and was very proud of his time served in the Navy. While he had full intentions of spending many years serving, after becoming a single father, he was given an Honorable Discharge and later moved back to Oregon to raise his 2 young daughters.
9 years later he met and married the love of his life, Lydia Badillo. Together they welcomed a 3rd daughter, Alexia, and they lived the remainder of his life in Ash Valley.
Upon returning to Oregon, Pete began working for International Paper Company as a heavy equipment operator on the chip pile until it closed.
Following IP’s closure he attended Umpqua Community College where he received his Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology degree.
While attending college he became a member of Phi Theta Kappa Society, wrote voraciously for the UCC newspaper, and discovered an unexpected knack for playing tennis.
Following graduation, he began working for Stuntzner Engineering in Coosbay as a Civil Engineer Technician until his retirement.
After retiring he joined the American Legion where he became Commander of Post #62.
Pete was a wonderful father, and a loving husband. He had a very strong faith in Christ. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends and loved being a grandfather and great grandfather. He always made sure that his family knew how much he loved them and was always willing to help anyone in need. A history buff with a beautiful gift for writing, he loved listening to all kinds of music, reading literature, traveling around in their little trailer, watching the Oregon Ducks play & he truly appreciated a good cigar. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Lydia, daughters Kristi Hamburg (husband Alex), Angie Tresch (husband Darell), Alexia Morgann (fiancé Kelly); brother John Ingles; 3 grandchildren Tyler Tresch (wife Anna), Madison Bishop (husband Steven), Noelani Brown; 3 great grandchildren, Blakelyn, Oakley Bishop and Haven Tresch, as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews & cousins.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his sister Diane Geerdes, brother Richard Stingley (aged 8), sister Cathie Rathbun and nephew Stephen Geerdes.
A memorial will be held February 8th at The Assembly of God church in Reedsport.
He will be laid to rest at a later date at Stafford Pioneer Cemetery in Mohawk Valley, OR.
