Obituary

Frederick Eugene Wegner was born to Ruby and Emil in Long Beach, CA, on January 8, 1952. They moved to Coalinga and then Fresno, where Fred graduated from Fresno High School in 1970.

His determination and unmatched work ethic came from his mother, who raised him, his brother, and two sisters, all while being a full-time caregiver to his father. He excelled in many sports, but his passion for baseball resulted in a second round draft pick with the Boston Red Sox. When injury and disillusionment with the business of baseball ended his career, he returned to Fresno and began a respected career as a pipeline welder. It was there he married Marcine and started a family. They later relocated to Vacaville and raised their three kids. He prided himself on his incredible work ethic, but he considered his role as a father to be his most fulfilling and important work. He loved his children and grandchildren above all.

After retirement, he reunited with his longtime friend, Cindy Davis. They moved to the forested coastal community of Reedsport, OR, and married, living out his days devoted to each other. A man’s man, he had an elegance, charm, warmth, and a sense of humor that was irresistible. It was his faith in God and his relationships with Cindy and his children that brought him through the hard months of dealing with his illness. Fred died peacefully at home on June 15, 2026, of throat cancer.

Fred is survived by his wife, Cindy; his children, Sam Wegner (Vacaville) and wife Natalie and children Jack, Ann Marie, and Lily; Susie LeRoy (Fresno) and husband Daniel and children Olivia, William, Wesley, and Emma; and Eddie Wegner (Fairfield) and wife Michelle and children Emilia and Diana. Relatives–His brother Butch, sister-in-law Deborah Owdom and husband Bruce, the Nathan Owdom family, Matthew and Marieme Owdom, Bruce Davis Owdom, Emily Blakley and family, Mary Walker and family. Friends–The gang from the Golden Days, Tim and Candy McFarland, Rich and Joann Patten, Jessica and Ann, Nancy Vangalder, and many more.
