Homer Howard Oldham was born Dec. 1, 1918 in Colderwood, Tennessee to Frank and Jennie (Smith) Oldham. He was raised and educated in Kelso, Wa., where he graduated from Kelso High School in 1938. He was a star player on the football team.

On Aug. 26, 1942 Johnny entered into the USCG-Merchant Marines where he served until June 19, 1945 sailing on the victory ships in Alaska and the Philippines. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Evelyn Viola Potterf.

Johnny was united in marriage to Evelyn “Viola” Potterf on Feb. 8, 1943 in Seattle, Wa. They spent a few years in Kelso and moved to Coos Bay, Or in 1950. They celebrated seventy years of life together and raised three children.

Johnny began his civilian career working as a machinist at Georgia Pacific in Coquille, retiring in 1980. He loved fixing things and had the heart of an inventor. When there was something unique that needed to be built he was always happy to help.

Among his personal interests he enjoyed fishing and spent some time on a commercial fishing boat.

Johnny was preceded in death by his son, Denny Oldham, who served in the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Viola, two daughters and sons in law; Cathy and Mark Siegrist, Coos Bay, Sharon and Deon Meyer, Coos Bay & Roseburg, five Grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions made to the Camp Fircroft on Langlois Mountain in care of the Greenacres Community Church, Coos Bay, in Johnny’s memory.
