James Arthur
Saunders
Jul 1, 1950 — Aug 31, 2026
Florence
James Arthur Saunders passed away on August 31, 2026, at the age of 76. He was born on July 1, 1950, in Dubuque, Iowa to Gilbert and Nola Saunders.
James was a straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is kind of man. His family always knew where they stood with him, but behind that straightforward nature was a man who deeply loved his family and treasured the time they spent together.
He especially enjoyed family get-togethers, where he could often be found barbecuing and enjoying the company of those he loved. James was an avid NASCAR fan, with Kyle Larson and the No. 5 car being his favorite. His love of racing extended to sprint cars as well, and he always enjoyed the excitement of a good race.
James and his wife, Jacki, were married on May 31 in the 1980s and shared many years of life and adventures together. They especially enjoyed traveling in their RV, including memorable trips to South Dakota. Another favorite destination was Reno, where James loved attending Hot August Nights and taking in the classic cars and atmosphere of the annual event.
James worked as a line foreman for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), a career that reflected his hardworking and dependable nature.
James also loved to bake and had quite the sweet tooth. Apple pie, apple fritters, and German chocolate cake with ice cream were among his favorites. His family affectionately knew him as a true “sweetaholic.”
Those who knew James will also remember his sense of humor and the familiar response he would give whenever someone caught him appearing to doze off: “I’m not sleeping, I’m just resting my eyes.”
More than anything, James loved being with his family. The barbecues, RV adventures, races, desserts, laughter, and simple moments spent together became the memories that mattered most.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Jacki of 46 years; his brothers, John Saunders and Jerry Saunders and his wife, Diana; his sister, Jean Rodriguez; his son, Jeremy Saunders and his wife, Bryn, and their “fur babies” Sissy and Simon; his son, Gene Altman and his wife, Victoria; and his grandchildren, Lexi “Sweet Pea,” Ashlee “Butch", Haley “Halo,” and Nathan “Spike.” as well as numerous nieces, nephews family members and friends.
James will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
