Obituary

Jerry Ray Chartier, Sr.

Jerry Ray Chartier, Sr., of Reedsport, Oregon, passed away on August 18, 2026. He was born on November 26, 1940, in Eugene, Oregon, to Dale H. Chartier and Viola L. Park.

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps retiring at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. His years of service were an important part of his life, and this was reflected by his dedication and commitment. Semper Fi! He served in many countries including some tours of duty in Viet Nam during the Viet Nam War. Many years later his service was recognized by being selected to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Jerry married Nancy Brown on August 10, 2011, beginning a marriage filled with companionship, laughter and plenty of memorable stories. Nancy was the one who actually suggested to Jerry that they get married, to which he agreed; but when the rings arrived, she made sure he almost got down on one knee and properly proposed! There was good communication between them, and they, for the most part, thought the same thing at the same time - true soulmates.

Jerry and Nancy tried fishing together since it was one of Jerry's interests. However, on the first fishing trip, Nancy accidentally dropped her fishing pole into the lake! Apparently, that was enough fishing for the two of them, and they never went again.

Jerry will be remembered for the life he lived, his proud service as a Marine and the special memories and laughter he shared with Nancy and all of his children -- both those born to him and the bonus children he accepted as his own in his previous marriages. He continued to love and care for all of them even after the marriage was unfortunately dissolved.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sister, Betty Jo; daughters Kathy Williams & Holly Hayes and son, Jerry, Jr., as well as his many nieces, nephews, grandchildren & great grandchildren, great nieces & great nephews, great great nephews, and step great nieces & step great nephews. He was, unfortunately, predeceased by his sister, Lois Johnson; daughters Tina Mercurio & Michelle Chartier; stepdaughter Michelle Gillispie; sons Kenny & Dennis, not to mention stepsons Steve Hodge & Bobby Allen.

God Speed, Jerry! You served the Marine Corps well through your sacrifice and devotion. And be at peace because everyone, including all your pets, knew you as a kind, generous but a quiet and humble hero & gentleman. Ooh Rah! Semper Fi!
