Barbara Shore Obituary

Barbara L. (Jose) Shore of Reedsport, OR passed away January 27, 2020. Barbara (Bobby) was the second daughter born to Herbert Jose and Charlotte (Wilson) Jose, born August 10, 1932 in Seattle, WA.

Bobby grew up between Seattle, WA and Honolulu, HI, making for a very adventurous childhood.  Her father passed when she was 6 years old. Bobby’s mom remarried, Frank Solak, and moved her daughters, Bobby and Dee, to Honolulu.  Bobby often told the stories of their time in Honolulu, and had very vivid memories of the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed, living there during that time, then the trip back to Seattle surrounded by military convoys.  Her mom took Bobby and Dee back to Seattle to live with their paternal grandmother and aunt for the rest of the war.  After World War II the girls moved back to Honolulu for a while, where a baby sister joined their family (Jaime Hart), and then the family returned to the Seattle area, where Bobby graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle, in 1950.

Bobby met the love of her life, George E. Shore, Jr., on a blind date arranged by mutual friends, they knew at once that they were meant for each other, they were married on March 21, 1952 in Bellevue, WA.  George (Bud) passed away, April 2, 2019, soon after celebrating their 67th anniversary,

Soon after marrying, the US Navy sent George to the Kwajalein Atoll during the Korean conflict, Bobby stayed in Seattle, but met up with George in Honolulu for a bit, before moving back to Seattle.  While George finished his studies at the UW, their family grew, George (Bud) and Bobby welcomed their two children, Linda and Jeffrey.

After George graduated from UW, he started his career with the Oregon Department of Forestry, taking Bobby and the family first to Prineville, OR, then to Coos Bay, Reedsport and Stayton, OR.  In 2018, Bobby and George, decided to move back to Reedsport, to be closer to grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

During her early years in Reedsport, Bobby worked for Dr. Rickard McLean, and later Dr. Robert Lewis, during the 1960’s and early 70’s.  Anyone that went to those doctors knew her, she was the 1st Bobby that worked there, if you called, you would get her voice first.  When they moved back to Reedsport, 40+ years later, she would see people at the store that remembered her from Dr. McLean’s office.  George was transferred to the Salem area in 1971, and so the family moved to Stayton, OR.  Bobby did some crafting and a lot of baking, but missed working in medical offices, so decided to go back to work.  She worked for Dr. Neary, when he retired she started a long career for Eugene McCallum MD, then when he retired she finished her career with Timothy Mahoney MD.  She loved working with people, and being able to help them.  Bobby helped patients figure out their bills and insurance, helped them maneuver the health care systems, she even had patients stop by the house to drop of payments on their doctor bills.  Bobby kept the friendships she made with the doctors, nurses and patients throughout the rest of her life.  …..and she never forgot a face or a name.  Everywhere she went she made friends, and kept in touch with them forever after.

After retiring, Bobby, and “Fornortner” (as she lovingly call George), enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, exploring the more remote areas of the Pacific Northwest, traveling to Hawaii, and spending time at their cabin in La Pine, Oregon. They spent a lot of campouts with the Oregon Department of Forestry Retirees, too. Most of all she enjoyed time with her family, not much made her happier than spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bobby is survived by her younger sister Jaime (Geeb) Hart of Crossroads, TX; daughter and son in law Linda & Rick Rochon of Reedsport, OR, son Jeffrey Shore of Salem, OR; 5 grandchildren & spouses – Juliana (Andrew) Yearous, Francis (Ingrid) Rochon, Patrick (Betty) Rochon, Teresa (George) Lichte, and Katrina (Juan) Gomez. She was “Grams or Grammy” to 18 great grandchildren – Thomas, Paul & Isaac Yearous, Vincent, Ambrose & Bennett Rochon, Demitria, Anthony, Elijah, Elizabeth & Fallon Rochon, Emily, Devin, River, Jude & Vegas Lichte, and Maria-Sofia & Anastasia Gomez.

Barbara (Bobby) was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, George (Bud) Shore, her sister Charlotte (Dee) Tollefson, her parents Herbert & Charlotte Jose, and stepfather Frank Solak.

A memorial Mass was offered for Barbara on February 1st, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Reedsport.  A private family inurnment is planned for sometime this summer.

Since moving back to Reedsport, with many medical issues, George and Barbara were both frequently seen at Lower Umpqua Hospital – they became friends with so many of the staff that they felt like family.  When their time came to go – they were surrounded by not only the love of their family, but the love of the wonderful staff (extended family) of LUH.
